South African Institute of Architects Biennial Convention 2008 |

The most prestigious event of the South African Institute of Architects (SAIA) is its Biennial Conference and Convention. The 2008 event was hosted by the Gauteng Institute for Architecture (GIfA) and was held from 29 to 31 October. Growing local and global shifts inspired an appropriate theme: “A Sustainable, Humane and Inclusionary Built Environment”. The event programme included a conference with local and international speakers, an exhibition of architectural work, products and materials and the SAIA Biennial Convention of members. Pre-eminent international speakers such as Dr Nnamdi Elleh from the USA – “Architecture and Power”; Joe Osae–Addo from Ghana – “Ultimately it is All About People”; Gaetan Siew from Mauritius and immediate past president of the International Union of Architects (UIA) – “Globalisation and the Architect” and Karan Grover from India – “First Do No Harm…” set a global backdrop for a unified message, echoed by the South African speakers. |

EXECUTIVE MATTERS | | The 2008 Biennial Convention, hosted by the Gauteng Institute for Architecture, is taking place from Wednesday 29 to Friday 31 October at the Vodaworld conference facility in Midrand. The event comprises a two and a half day conference, followed by a ‘convention of all members’ (to quote the constitution) and a gala dinner at which the Corobrik SAIA Awards for Excellence will be announced. The programme, structured around the theme, Sustainable, Humane and Inclusionary Built Environment, includes several international and national speakers, workshops, a trade show, exhibitions, architectural and heritage tours and evening and weekend activities.
